Lusterware

Figural dish

 soapdish4  soapdish2
 soapdish1  soapdish3

I am still trying to figure this one out. This little figural stands 4 1/2" tall with the bowl measuring 2 1/2". I don't know if it is for salt, soap or just for looks. The orange band around the bottom has a slight luster to it, but not enough to be "lusterware". There is significant crazing over the entire piece, but all the paint is under glaze so there is no flaking. Even the black line visible on the front of the bowl (upper left) is under glaze. The inside of the piece is glazed but the bottom has a light to non-existent coating of glaze. The stamp reads: Made in Japan. There are two mold seams visible on the bottom. The style and glazing would suggest a late Victorian to Art Deco period of production. But, as I said on the home page, I am not an expert and all I really know is that I bought it at an estate sale in 1978.

A very unusual 1930s? 8 1/2" Sumidagawa Plate by Seyei Toki Co. Limited** has a vivid yellow sky (much brighter than pictured). This is a very vibrant, beautiful plate and is in very good condition. There is one flaw that appears to have happened in the firing process. (see above) The paint and luster are otherwise perfect. There are no chips, flaking or pealing and the yellow has an opalescent quality like I have never before seen. This unique plate will be an excellent addition to your collection.

Noted in "Made in Japan II" book page 9 by Carol Bess White, this mark belongs to Seyei Toki Co Ltd in Nagoya, and they had several differnt marks...from http://waiapo.com/orientalcats/marks.html#sumida)

All are in pretty good condition with a little flaking (Left middle and lower) The spot shown in the image above is from tape and can be removed.

Very pretty and delicate, there is a tabbed server with four small plates. I have no idea of date or manufacturer. They are most likely from a childs tea service. The tabbed serving plate is only 5".
